Blog: The Gift of Reading

Hello to anyone reading this.

I’m going to tell you a story (well the short version of a story as not to bore you) of a wonderful man who gave me a gift, the gift is reading.

Growing up he always taught me that reading is fun. “Read anything” he would tell me.

I loved laying on the couch reading whatever book I was reading at the time and him sitting in his chair reading his book.

As I am typing this I am sitting on my couch but he won’t be sitting in his chair anymore.

Sadly he passed away this past February. My grandfather was more than just my grandfather.

I spent almost every weekend of my life with him. He was like a dad to me. Reading was a way we bonded.

The last day I spent spending time with him. We visited a small used book store. I got three books and he picked up three books that totaled to $6. I remember him being so surprised. We then went to lunch and talked about my life at college and life and times. The books he bought me were The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Memoirs of a Geisha.

Jumping in time to about three weeks ago, I was sitting with grandma who was teaching me how to sew. Under one of the side tables where the books grandpa would be reading would stay I saw The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I opened it and it had his bookmark in it. Page 58 is where he stopped and I think it was really weird that it’s one of the books he bought me the last time we spent the day together. It’s the last book he was reading at home. Grandma let me keep it so now I will always have his copy and mine. ❤

I think of him and miss him everyday. Happy Birthday Grandpa.

I thought it would be good to not only share my love of reading but also share other peoples’.
My name is Heather otherwise know as Bookables.
I run a Youtube channel where you guessed it- I talk about books.

  1. You are so lucky to have had someone like your grandfather. ❤
I think for me, it was my parents who got me into reading. They didn't really encourage me or anything, but they used to buy a lot of comic books and children's book when I was younger, and I would just read them. When I grew up, I was more self-dependent on getting books to read though. I didn't have anyone to go with me to bookstores or wherever.
Oh, and I love a lot of the same series too. 🙂

    1. I think it’s great that we can connect with reading. I didn’t really think much about how or why I was reading until my grandfather passed. Sometimes you don’t realize things until they aren’t there anymore. And I think our taste in books changes as we get older too. Do you have a favorite series?

      1. At least you’d always have great memories of him when you read. 🙂
        Change is inevitable, I guees.
My favorite series would be Delirium by Lauren Oliver. 🙂
